You know when someone has something on their face? You know, like a bit of food in their beard. Or a trickle of blood from a shaving cut. Or what looks like a hunk of venison stuck between their teeth. But you don’t really know the person. They’re new, you’ve only just been introduced, and you don’t really want to talk about the thing on their face. You know.
Well the Toshiba TG01 is just like that, except it’s the whole face that is the issue. The whole 4.1-inch face is so monstrously big that you don’t know where to put your eyes. You want to talk about the other things you know this person is famous for, their other achievements. The fact that the fantastic fast and low-power-consuming Qualcomm processor is being used inside, making all the transitions and animations and other number-crunching features and apps you might want to use as smooth as can be. Or you want to maybe just tickle their ego with a nod towards their super fast 10.2mbs HSDPA speeds. You may even, if you were feeling more confrontational, more Jeremy Paxman (less Piers Morgan), ask where the Toshiba TG01‘s 3.5mm jack was, or why they’d chosen the Windows Mobile OS. But instead, all you can do is stare at the face. That gigantic face.
Then the TG01 (have a look at the Official site if you dare) might ask you to touch their face. To explore their heavily skinned (to hide the origin) Windows Mobile 6.1 interface (updateable to 6.5 as soon as it’s released). The flip between the menus seamless, look, look. Then they might show you how a movie plays on their face, making you note the dynamic gamma correction, look, look.
And pretty soon, as you might expect, you’re running – running faster than your legs will take you, screaming that no phone should ever have a face that big, that it’s just not right, it’s not fair on the phone itself which really isn’t all that, to have such a face. Such a monstrous face. Then you go home and read this Toshiba TG01 review instead, where you don’t have to see the face in person. Then even dare yourself to look at the video below, in which the face appears not as scary as you first thought. And you wonder if it was all a dream…
Samsung has announced that they will be releasing an upgraded version of their original Samsung Pixon and they have come up with the original name of the Samsung Pixon 12. So what is different between the original Pixon and the newer Pixon 12? Well, the number of megapixels that you get for your money is an obvious one. It seems that Samsung are going head to head with Sony Ericsson’s newly named Sony Ericsson Satio, originally named the Sony Ericsson Idou, in an attempt to keep pace with market demand. On a personal note I think I preferred the name Idou, but that is another post in itself. If we are to go on looks, for me the Satio wins hands down for me, it is an altogether slicker looking handset, assuming that the pictures we have seen are what the handset will actually look like when it is released later this year. If I am honest I would have thought that Samsung would have upgraded the looks of the Samsung Pixon 12 somewhat, as for me it does look a little outdated, but for those who are going on performance alone, I’m sure it will not disappoint. You can also be pretty sure that the Pixon 12 will be released before the Satio to ensure that all those people desperate for higher pixel levels opt for Samsung over Sony Ericsson. You can also be sure that the other manufacturers will be quick to follow suit with handsets with equal or greater numbers of megapixels for you to choose from. Personally I feel we have reached the peak in the megapixel debate. Other aspects are now far more important for me. I now want WiFi, HSDPA and even streaming TV. The introduction of the iplayer on certain handsets is a great feature to have on your phone in my opinion. So let’s see something more than just megapixels on our handsets…please?
Toshiba are not really known for their mobile phones, however the release of the Toshiba TG01 marks a distinct shift in the company’s attentions. And boy have they done a pretty good job. The TG01 comes with a very impressive 4.1 inch touch screen which will allow for a more than adequate media playback facility and at only 9.9mm thick it is slim enough to fit in anybody’s pocket.
So who does the Toshiba TG01 need to contend with? Well firstly there is the newly announced LG Arena KM900, however this mobile phone does not come with as big a touch screen as its Toshiba counterpart and we doubt that it will come with the processing power boasted by Toshiba (a hefty 1GHZ apparently). Then there is the Blackberry Curve, a mobile phone probably more suited to the business emailer due to its QWERTY keyboard. And of course then there is the Nokia N97, the penultimate mobile phone for release in July this year. Can Toshiba hold its own in this marketplace? We think so, just as long as its “G sensor” navigation system is easy to use, which we hope it is. Watch out this year as there seems to be some serious mobile technology set for release despite the gloomy economic outlook.
