Nokia n97 mini. Small package, big loving
Size isn’t everything, as we’re told. And as we tell ourselves each and every day. Whether that’s your belly, you feet, your **** or your ********, it only takes a look in the mirror to spark that little phrase in your head.
Well, it’s true, of course. Size isn’t everything. But it does count for a hell of a lot, especially in the fickle world of mobile communications. Or phones, to us a slightly smaller description. And that, basically, is what you’ve got with the Nokia N97 Mini: the same thing as before, just in smaller package. There’s a couple of minor changes: the 32GB of internal storage has been bumped down to 8GB (though you can bump yourself back up to 24GB with a microSD card) and the keyboard’s been re-jiggered (technical term, you heard right) to make it smaller, the biggest loser being the d-pad which has been cast into, well, keyboard heaven, if such a place exists.
You may hear too some waffle about extra Facebook connectivity, some improved scrolling features, etc. and so on and so forth, but for all those tiny tweaks, little has really happened apart from that size shift with this ‘new’ Nokia N97.
so… well… there we have it. We could say we’re disappointed but that’s not really true… underwhelmed, perhaps, is more accurate. But then even that sounds harsh. As this Nokia N97 mini review shows, this is far from being a good phone. But perhaps Nokia could have done just a little bit more; just added a little bit more razzmatazz, a little more flair.

Awaiting the release of the Toshiba TG01
Toshiba are not really known for their mobile phones, however the release of the Toshiba TG01 marks a distinct shift in the company’s attentions. And boy have they done a pretty good job. The TG01 comes with a very impressive 4.1 inch touch screen which will allow for a more than adequate media playback facility and at only 9.9mm thick it is slim enough to fit in anybody’s pocket.
So who does the Toshiba TG01 need to contend with? Well firstly there is the newly announced LG Arena KM900, however this mobile phone does not come with as big a touch screen as its Toshiba counterpart and we doubt that it will come with the processing power boasted by Toshiba (a hefty 1GHZ apparently). Then there is the Blackberry Curve, a mobile phone probably more suited to the business emailer due to its QWERTY keyboard. And of course then there is the Nokia N97, the penultimate mobile phone for release in July this year. Can Toshiba hold its own in this marketplace? We think so, just as long as its “G sensor” navigation system is easy to use, which we hope it is. Watch out this year as there seems to be some serious mobile technology set for release despite the gloomy economic outlook.

The Nokia N97 V the Iphone, can you really compare them?
All the hype is about the latest phone from Nokia, the N97. This is the first top end handset that comes with a touch screen and qwerty keyboard. People are saying that it is an iphone killer, but to be honest I’m not so sure. The reason that I’m not so sure is not because I don’t think that the N97 is as good, in fact I think completely the opposite, I think that it is better. Please bear with me because there is method in my logic here, allow me to explain. People who buy the Nokia N97 on contract will be business users, whereas people who buy an Iphone contract are making more of a brand statement. Apple is a brand and a very good one at that. They buy the Iphone because it looks cool, will sync with their itunes on their mac and has some funky multi touch screen functions that let you zoom in and out. All this is very cool, but not really what you need when you are trying to send emails at a furious rate, send business cards to your colleagues, or type up documents whilst on the tube. My point is that the Nokia N97 and the Iphone are aimed at 2 different markets and have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Of course we are waiting to see who gets the exclusive launch for the N97, we are guessing you will either get the Nokia N97 on Vodafone or perhaps we maybe surprised and see the Nokia N97 on T-mobile as a first release, although seeing as they have the G1, it is unlikely.
