Samsung Galaxy S II O2 UK Prices: Contract & PayG

Being one of the top selling phones currently on the market, the Galaxy S II is being offered on many different carriers. O2 UK is currently offering the Galaxy S II to customers who are interested in purchasing it on contract or on Pay & Go plans.

The Galaxy S II is among the slimmest phones ever produced and is only 8.49mm thick. Even with that thinness, Samsung has managed to up the megapixel count on the camera from 5MP on the previous version to 8MB. There is a LED flash as well as a 1.3MP front facing camera. The phone runs on Android Gingerbread 2.3 and has a gorgeous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen.

O2 is offering the phone on several types of contracts. For those who would like to get the GSII for free, they can get it for as little as £27.00 a month. For that price you will get 300 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited text messaging. For £32.00 the minutes are doubled and unlimited texting is still on board. £37.00 brings the minutes up to 900 with unlimited texting still included. At £42.00 there are 1200 minutes and unlimited texting and for those who are interested in going even higher, there is unlimited talk and text.

If one is interested in paying a lower monthly bill, the phone can be purchased for £149.00 on contract with a £16.50 plan that includes 50 minutes and 250 texts. For a price of £104..99 for the phone, the monthly plan will cost £21.50 and a total of 100 minutes and 500 texts are included.

Those looking to go completely off contract can purchase the phone for £479.99 and hop on a Pay & Go plan.

Anticipating the Second Wave: The Arrival of the Samsung Wave 723

Samsung seems to have found success in their Wave line of devices and one of the more recent additions to the growing family is the Samsung Wave 723. Similar to its predecessors, this device is also a high end Smartphone that delivers a ton of impressive features.

Although it doesn’t possess the highly acclaimed Super AMOLED touch screen display of the Wave S8500, it still has a lot of other things to offer. Here’s a quick review of this Smartphone that hopes to further establish the legacy of the Wave series.

Hardware Specs

The Samsung Wave 723 looks like your typical touch screen device that also features a very sleek design. However, what makes it stand out in terms of its physical characteristics is the leather flap that is attached to the device. It serves as a protective cover for the screen and shows some semblance of Samsung’s previous release, the Samsung Star.
The Wave 723 measures 109.5 x 53.9 x 11.8 mm.

The built-in camera of the Samsung Wave 723 is actually pretty praiseworthy. It has a respectable resolution of 5 Megapixels and comes with an LED flash on board. Some of the features of the snapper include geo-tagging, autofocus, and smile detection.

The Soft Side

The Samsung Wave 723 still features the much talked about Bada operating system. This mobile OS is designed by Samsung and all things considered, it is actually a pretty formidable piece of software.

Running on top of it is another Samsung baby which is the TouchWiz user interface. Version 3.0 is what’s on the Wave 723 and combined with the impressive Bada OS, the two work perfectly together.

The Wave 723 support 3G HSDPA as well as Wi-Fi connectivity which means that you need not worry about staying connected to the internet using this device. It even comes with a boatload of internet applications that aren’t only aesthetically pleasing, but quite functional as well.

Samsung’s Wave and Galaxy On Pre Order: Coming This June

eXpansys is pretty fast when it comes to getting devices announced ahead of time, and while the previous announcement about the Wave and Galaxy S smart phones coming earlier than expected turning out to be wrong, they still managed to be the first to offer the device to customers.

According to the eXpansys website, they are now offering both Samsung smart phones for pre-orders and that the first batch of shipments will be coming in by the first day of June. The announcement is great news to anyone who has been waiting to try out and see what the new super AMOLED touch screen displays are really like.

The new screen technology was first seen during the Mobile World Congress last February when the Samsung Wave phone was first brought out to the public. The smart phone had two main features –the new display screen and the new open source mobile platform by Samsung, Bada. The new OS has gotten plenty of developer support and has a slowly growing app library. According to Samsung, the Bada OS will be used mainly on their mid level range handsets. The company is expected to continue development and support of high end smart phones that use other operating systems.

Speaking of which, the i9000 Galaxy S is an Android smart phone that also comes with the new super AMOLED screen display. The device runs on a 1GHz CPU and has a 5 mega pixel snapper. It is a great device for those who liked the style of the Galaxy handsets (which only recently made it to the UK).

With both phones now available on pre-order, eXpansys is officially the first to offer the new Samsung devices in the UK.

Super AMOLED and DivX on Samsung Smart Phones

This April and May, Samsung is going to take plenty of impressive firsts in the mobile phone industry.

To start off, the super AMOLED screen seems like it has become the new standard for high end Samsung smart phones. First shown at the Mobile World Congress, the Samsung S8500 Wave device was the very first handset to use the technology where it was praised for its very impressive 3.3 inch capacitive touch screen display.

Most of the comments regarding the super AMOLED display described its brightness and clarity as being very exceptional; others remarked that the “blacks” appeared to be real blacks as opposed to being unlit gray pixels.

This new screen technology also appears in the larger 4 inch display of the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S. the Korean manufacturer has not said why the Android smart phone will be getting a larger version of the new display. Other than these two phones, it was also reported that a yet to be identified Samsung WP7 device will have a super AMOLED display as well. This brings the total of devices using the new technology up to three.

Aside from the new screen technology, the Wave and the Galaxy S are also going to be much sought after as they are the first smart phones to have DivX HD video playback capabilities. While this technology may eventually be common among smart phones, it is an impressive feature that is not present in the HTC Desire or the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.

For those who missed out, the Wave is Samsung’s first Bada smart phone. The new open source mobile platform from Korea has proven to be quite the system when it was shown off last December to many developers.

New Super AMOLED Phone from Samsung Gets DivX

The good news with the new Android smart phone from Samsung keeps on coming with the recent announcement that the Galaxy S will come with support for DivX videos. DivX has been a primary choice for video encoding for many people for its high quality and excellent compression rate. With the Galaxy S able to run at HD resolutions, it will be the first HD capable smart phone to come with DivX support.

While that is certainly great news for media buffs everywhere, the Galaxy S is already a great hit among smart phone fans as it is the first Android phone to be used in the super AMOLED display. The 4 inch capacitive touch screen display is expected to deliver images and videos in crisp stunning quality that other mobile devices cannot match. Aside from the impressive touch screen, it has also been confirmed that the phone will be running a 1GHz CPU and will have a 5 mega pixel camera as well.

On the software side, the device is reported to be using the new Android 2.1 OS and will also have the Samsung TouchWiz user interface. Additional features on the Galaxy S include the new Smart Life (a basic daily task helper) and ThinkFree (a Word document reader and editor) apps as well as the recently released Social Hub networking tool.

The first device to use the screen technology is the Samsung Wave –which is also the first mobile phone to use the Bada operating system. It was showcased at the Mobile World Congress where the open source platform was praised for its impressive app support and the screen technology was highly recognized for delivering superior quality images over standard AMOLED displays.

Samsung Genio Touch S3650. Cereal bars for all!

Ah, our old favourite makes an appearance: Utterly Redundant Marketing Slogans (or URMS, for short), how we have missed you.

Sometimes URMS are funny because they’ve been created by someone in Korea, then badly translated. Fun Time Phone in Pocket for All, would be a hastily made up example. Sometimes URMS are just outright lies. Colour Like No Other, from Sony is a pretty decent one there (because, right, yeah, your TVs make red seem like no other red or green anyone has ever ever seen, course they do).

Then sometimes, as is making an appearance right now with the Samsung Genio Touch, you get URMS that are so outrightly pointless that you have to wonder if they’re actually a joke. To cut the suspense, Samsung’s effort here is “touch for every lifestyle”. So this not only applies to the Samsung Genio Touch, but also to every touch phone they release from now on in. Okay, you think, so what’s so bad. Well, think about it. Marketing slogans and ads are supposed to differentiate products from the crowd. Make you think that phone A or Cereal Bar B has something about it that is so special, so unique, that you can’t but buy it. Touch for every lifestyle says the exact opposite. It says, we make touchscreen phones for everyone, all of you, we don’t care who you are or what you do or what makes you special, we don’t even care about you at all, but hey! That’s a good thing, because that means we’ve got just what you need. Idiots.

What’s that? You wanted to know about the phone, rather than listen to us rant about URMS. Bah! What did you expect? This isn’t a blog for every lifestyle. Check out this Samsung Genio Touch review, or have a look at the official press release for more facts, less rants.

Grab an August bargain of a mobile phone contract

After all the bad news that we’ve been hearing recently regarding the economy, falling house prices, bad weather and the rest, we thought it was high time we cheered you folks up by hunting out some mobile phone bargains for you to take a look at. If you are thinking about taking out a new contract in the near future then why check out some of these bargains that we have found for you. We have chosen the best handsets that we could find and paired them with the best tariffs. So let us know what you think.
1) Nokia 5530 deals – This one comes top simply because you can get for a steal on an 18 month contract. £20.29 per month gets you 600 minutes and unlimited texts. If you compare that to number 2 on this list, you will see how much of a good deal this actually is.
2) Nokia N97 deals – The same tariff for the Nokia N97 will set you back £40.00 per month on Vodafone. However this is a serious bit of kit, packing in a QWERTY keyboard and a touch screen, as well as more memory than is in my brain. If you can afford, go for it.
3) Samsung Jet deals – The Samsung Jet is one of the most underrated phones in my opinion. It is built on the Android platform and although I was sceptical at first, I truly feel that this will be the OS of choice in 3 years time. It’s also fantastic value. For £21.20 per month you get 400 minutes and 3000 texts, which is enough for the average user. It has some really great features too.
4) HTC Hero deals – Yep I’m going for another Android phone, because I love them. This is better than the Jet, but a little more expensive. No QWERTY keyboard though (like the Jet). You can get this one for £25.28 per month on the same tariff as the Jet
5) Blackberry 8520 deals – A bright screen and nicer buttons mean that the 8520 makes it into our hall of fame. I also couldn’t help but notice the rather tasty £170 automatic cashback available on O2. Perhaps this one deserves notching up a place or two, what do you think?
6) Nokia N86 deals – The long awaited phone from Nokia builds on the gaming performance of the N85. My pick is the Vodafone 600 minutes unlimited texts at £35.00 per month. An overlooked handset in my opinion.
7) Sony Ericsson W995 deals – great camera, even better music features, is there a better Sony Ericsson mobile phone out there at the moment? Both our heart and head is saying no, and for only a snip over £21.00 per month on T-Mobile, you have to consider this handset as a possibility.
8) LG Crystal deals – Ok it is a little bit more expensive than some of the other phones, with a few less features, but it does look seriously cool. You can expect to pay £30 per month for this one though and for that reason it comes in at number 8 on our hotlist of August contract phones

Samsung S9110. Back to the future

We like a good bit of retro action here, and the Samsung S9110 is giving us retro tingles aplenty. For the simple reason that two of the best ever things we owned here as kids were:

1.The calculator watch. Admittedly, thinking back, this might not have been the best thing ever – “kneel before me friends, for I can now multiply large numbers on my wrist” – but at the time it did seem pretty amazing. A calculator! On a watch! On your arm! Amazing…

2.The TV remote watch. Now, hitting the market as it did while we were in high school, this thing was a stroke of genius. As long as you had your little book of codes relating to which channel you need to set the thing to in relation to the brand of TV (or VHS player) you wanted to control, you were set. That meant that whenever a teacher wanted to show you a video, you were then in complete control, tucked just peeking out of your sleeve as this thing was. Interesting sex bit on a biology video? REWIND! Boring bit of chatter from some historian. MUTE! Absolute genius… Nearly caused many a teacher to have a breakdown.

And now, we have the Samsung S9110, arriving in little more than a few weeks, and we are very excited indeed. Fair enough, it might actually be kind of awkward to plug headphones into the thing, or to use the speakerphone function. In fact, we think beyond gimmick value there might not be all that much going here… but come on! It’s a watchphone! A watch, on a phone! Woooooo…

Check out this Samsung S9110 review for some slightly less teenage-giddy opinions, or just have a look at these Samsung S9110 deals instead.

Samsung S5600 Preston. Better than peaches

Sometimes the names of things amuse us. Sony Ericsson’s constant use of names that sound like characters out of Lord of the Rings for example. Satio, hast thou seen the ring?! Aino, where have you been Aino, we though you were lost to Mordor forever! Others, like Nokia, just annoy us. Is that the 6700?Or the 6710? or the 6705? Ohhhh, it is the 6700, but they also had another phone also called the 6700 a few years ago, but we have to ignore that. Great, thanks.

Samsung though have taken a step into a whole new realm though with the Samsung S5600 Preston. Because, well, we don’t know whether to laugh or cry about this one. Preston? Is this like the mobile phone version of calling your kid after the place where you knocked your missus up by mistake, a la Brooklyn, a la Chelsea? Were a bunch of hardcore R&D geeks sat around a Travel Lodge on the outskirts of Preston when one of them suddenly shouted, “I know, we’ll just slightly re-jig the Tocco Lite, add some GPS and 3G, give it a silly name, then sit back and watch as millions and millions of people look for Samsung Preston deals.” Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Either way: Preston? SERIOUSLY?! Oh well. It’s better than Peaches I guess. Check out this Samsung Preston review if you want more than some spurious musings, or have a look at Samsung’s official page for, well, The official Samsung Page. Or – and we really, really don’t actually recommend this – watch this video of some sad goon unpacking his Preston for the first time. Disturbing stuff.

Samsung Tocco Lite. Chin scratchy

Various phrases are popping into our head, few of them pleasant. The foremost being “like trying to fix diarrhoea to the wall with a nail and hammer.” And why does this come to mind when we sit quietly and contemplate the Samsung Tocco Lite?

Well, first of all take a look at the official page for the phone. Right, done that? So as you can see, Samsung are very keen to impress upon the impressionable you that this phone is all about the social network aspects. That the TouchWiz interface uses “widgets” (whatever the hell they are) to allow access to MySpace, Facebook or YouTube. Oh, and as an added bonus you can upload photographs directly from the Samsung Tocco Lite to the internet.

Super! you think. I like to update my Facebook status five times a day – once for each meal I have just so everyone knows (especially you, mum!), and once when I get up in the morning, and once just before I go to bed, just so everyone knows exactly how long I’m awake and what I’m thinking from the first minute (not very much!!!).

Yeah, great, and I’m sure you’ll find a girlfriend one day, if you’re very, very lucky and attend enough gaming conventions.

But for the more perceptive of you out there, you might also have realised that this thing has no 3G connectivity. And, for the even more perceptive – gold stars for you – you’ll have also noticed that the poor blighter is lacking anything by the way of WiFi too.

Hmm, you think, scratching your chin. But if this thing lacks those things, how is it supposed to do all that internet thingy?

Good question, gold star wearing boy, good question. Luckily we have the answer for you: WAP. Yes, WAP! You remember, Wireless Application Protocol, that thing from a few years ago that we thought was redundant. It’s back! Well, it never really went away. But, erm, it’s still pretty crap. Don’t get us wrong, there’s plenty that Samsung have got right with the Lite (have a gander at this Samsung Tocco Lite review if you don’t believe us), but come on: would it really have broken the bank to stick some half decent internet connectivity in there? Oh, and just in case you’re wondering about the video, the Lite is called the Star in India…
